Brief History of ChatGPT
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has been working on developing and training the language model since 2018.
ChatGPT is built using the large language model of the GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) family. It is fine-tuned using supervised learning as well as reinforcement learning. You can also enable data analysis and visualization, file conversion, code editing and other advanced tasks using ChatGPT code interpreter.
Early versions of the language model class include GPT-1 & GPT-2. The primary focus of the GPT-1 model was on language understanding; the second model was trained using Reddit articles of over 40 GigaBytes in size. It was also used to generate music on famous platforms such as JukeBox.
OpenAI released the GPT-3 model in 2020, which also powers the following:
- DALL-E: creating images from text.
- CLIP: connecting text and images.
- Whisper: multi-lingual voice-to-text.
- ChatGPT: chatbot, article writer, code writer.
The company released ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, built on top of GPT-3.5 through extensive training on datasets.

Funded by Microsoft, OpenAI is Forecasted to Generate $200 Million in 2023
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, was founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, who pledged $1 billion in 2015. Microsoft invested $1 billion in the company in 2019. The company transitioned from non-profit to for-profit in 2019 and released GPT-3, a large language model with its API as its first profit-making asset.
The company also released products such as DALL-E that generated AI images from prompts.
Microsoft has remained a major investor in OpenAI; the company has invested more than $3 billion since 2019. In January 2023, Microsoft announced investing more money in its third partnership phase. Reports state the amount to be more than $10 billion.
Initially, ChatGPT was free-to-use for everyone during its beta release. It gained high media coverage, with over 57 million users by the end of January 2023. On February 1, 2023, the company announced ChatGPT Plus, a paid subscription-based version offering priority access even during peak times and early access to new features.
Earlier in 2021, OpenAI was valued at $14 billion and is now valued at more than $80 billion or more, making it one of the most valuable companies in the United States. Thus, the popularity of Chat GPT and the correct marketing strategy has increased the company’s valuation more than twice in less than two years!
OpenAI is forecasted to generate $1.3 billion in revenue in 2023 and touch the $1 billion mark in 2024.
ChatGPT Plus & GPT APIs: The Monetization of ChatGPT by OpenAI
OpenAI has released a subscription-based paid version of ChatGPT. It is also known as ChatGPT Turbo, which is much faster than the general version. It costs $20/month and offers the following benefits:
- Access to Chat GPT, even during peak times.
- Quick response time.
- Priority access to new features.
The company also declared that it would continue offering customers the free version of ChatGPT.
OpenAI also released the Chat GPT API for developers.
The model is named gpt-4
, which costs $0.03 per thousand tokens.
Supervised and Unsupervised Training of ChatGPT Language Model
ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) of the GPT-3 series, which has been trained using supervised fine-tuning and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). It is the largest learned language model in the human history of artificial intelligence, with about 175 billion ML parameters.
The training was completed in three phases, which also included super-vised & unsupervised techniques.
Some facts about ChatGPT training:
- The training dataset contains over 570 GB of text.
- The model was fine-tuned using several GBs of the dataset.
- The training model has around 24 layers.
- The number of attention heads is around 96.
- The training process used 1000 NVIDIA V100 GPUs.
- It is trained on Microsoft’s Azure AI supercomputing technologies.
The Limitations of ChatGPT: It is Not Perfect
ChatGPT self-declares the limitations of the platform.
Internet users also witnessed a few issues while using ChatGPT. Some of the limitations of ChatGPT are:
- Sometimes generates incorrect information.
- It is not aware of events of the world after 2021.
- It can not access the internet and thus can not provide fresh data.
- Responses are not always reliable and occasionally biased.
- The free version can process a limited number of prompts or requests per hour.
ChatGPT: A Threat to Human Creativity?
ChatGPT is extremely powerful in churning out essays, solving maths problems, and helping students do their homework without any mental effort. This posed a risk to the student’s creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Many schools and universities have reportedly banned the use of Chat GPT.
Furthermore, there were reports of many organizations and companies banning ChatGPT in their workspace.
Upcoming Language Models: Looking Forward to The Future of ChatGPT
OpenAI is continuously improving its language models and rolling out regular model upgrades.

ChatGPT-Powered Search Engine: Bing Chat
Microsoft already had a major stake in OpenAI and planned to leverage AI to improve Bing search to give strong competition to its rival—Google.
On February 7, 2023, the company announced its re-inventing the Bing search with AI. Bing adds a new tab for the Chat feature, which offers the search results in a conversational manner.
It works similarly to ChatGPT but is powered by real-time data from the websites present in the Bing Index.
This ChatGPT + Bing Index combined AI model is named Prometheus.
It is one of its kind AI model that merges search with chat.
Recently, Bing has released the Image Creator that generates images from prompts using OpenAI’s DALL-E.
