What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI-based chatbot that answers queries in a conversational manner, just like a real person. 🔮
Users can interact with ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) in a conversational manner.
It is developed to follow instructions in prompts and generate responses.
ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 large language model, extensively trained to understand user queries and generate satisfactory responses using supervised training and reinforcement learning.
Its remarkable conversational and problem-solving abilities allow it to answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes and reject inappropriate requests.
Currently, OpenAI has introduced the research release of ChatGPT, which is open to use and collects user feedback for constant improvement.
Who Built ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is owned by OpenAI, a San Fransisco-based artificial intelligence company.
The company mainly works in AI research & development aimed at developing safe AGI that benefits humanity.
Other popular outcomes of their research include DALL·E·2, which generates images based on prompts.
Sam Altman is the current CEO of OpenAI, who founded the company in 2015 with other co-founders. Interestingly, Elon Musk was also one of the co-founders of OpenAI, who left the company in 2018. Microsoft also has a big investment of $1 billion in OpenAI and is reported to bring ChatGPT to its search engine Bing soon.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT: What’s the Big Deal?
ChatGPT is surprisingly capable of understanding human queries, processing them, and generating appropriate responses. The self-learning capabilities of ChatGPT help it perform tasks based on available knowledge without any specific training.
This means users can also instruct the model to perform a specific task in a specific manner, just like a human assistant.
It can memorize earlier queries, challenge incorrect premises, reject inappropriate queries, and admit its mistakes.
ChatGPT’s Large Langauge Model &Â Training
ChatGPT is a large langauge model (LLM).
The large language models use an extensive database to predict the next word in a sentence or a series of words. The larger the dataset, the more accurate the prediction will be.
ChatGPT or GPT-3.5 is the trained version of Open AI’s GPT-3.0 model containing 175 billion parameters. It is the largest neural network built to date. ChatGPT is better and more accurate at understanding the human language and predicting the next word than the old GPT-3.0. It was trained on 570 GB of textual data from the internet, such as Wikipedia, books, and forum discussions, to understand the human pattern of conversations and interactions.
The model completed its training in early 2022. It was trained using supervised fine-tuning and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) for more optimization toward dialogues. It was initially trained by human AI trainers that provided dialogues for both parties — the user and AI.
After the supervised fine-tuning, the improved dialogue dataset was mixed with the earlier dataset of InstructGPT.Next, a reward model for reinforcement learning was created where human rates for further tuning rated the quality of responses by the model. This process was repeated to train the model to better understand the user intent and produce more appropriate responses.
Currently, the research preview of ChatGPT also collects user feedback and uses it for further improvement.
ChatGPT Vs. Search Engines
People over the internet are debating whether ChatGPT will replace search engines such as Google.
ChatGPT lists its capability and limitation on its official website as the following:
Capabilities | Limitations |

Well, that’s quite honest..!
Search engines such as Google are meant to find information over the internet from multiple resources. ChatGPT is a chatbot assistant and can be used to retrieve information from its own knowledge base, which is limited. Now, let’s compare ChatGPT & Google from multiple aspects.
- Finding Instant Answers:Â Using ChatGPT, you can find instant answers to your queries. On the other hand, while using a search engine, you may need to visit a site or two if the answer is not present on the SERP. ChatGPT is a clear winner here.
- Get the Latest Information:Â As mentioned above, ChatGPT has limited knowledge of events up to 2021 and, therefore, is not useful for getting the latest news and information related to events after 2021. In this case, Google prevails over ChatGPT.
- Accuracy & Reliability:Â ChatGPT often produces inaccurate results, and unlike Google, it does not provide any information about the sources, which puts a question mark on its reliability. This makes Google preferable over ChatGPT.
- Problem-Solving Capabilities:Â ChatGPT is insanely capable of solving problems using its knowledge base, whereas Google depends on other sites.
ChatGPT and search engines both are masters of their ships. Search engines like Google are perfect for internet research and retrieving information from multiple sources. On the other hand, ChatGPT is ideal for finding instant answers to queries and solutions for problems. Read more at ChatGPT vs Google.
Both of them complement each other in some aspects and can be integrated with one another for a boosted experience. Interestingly, ChatGPT’s investor Microsoft is reported to be planning to combine OpenAI’s ChatGPT with its Bing search engine, and it is expected to be launched by March.
