Google I/O 2023 Highlights: 30 Key Announcements You Need to Know
Google I/O 2023 had an extra buzz this year as it was its 15th anniversary! The flagship event was organized at Shoreline Amphitheatre (Mountain View, California) on May 10, 2023. It was also open for everyone to attend online.
The tech giant announced a lot of updates: new Pixel devices, search experience, artificial intelligence, and more. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google remained a keynote speaker at the event. Here are the highlights of the key announcements at Google I/O 2023. 👇

New Pixel Devices with Exciting Features
In the Google I/O 2023 event, the company launched three new devices to its Pixel portfolio.
- Google launched its first foldable phone with a 7.6” screen and Google Tensor G2 chip. It features Android’s split-screen features and introduces Rear Camera Selfie mode, a new feature in the Pixel camera.
- Pixel 7a has a bigger lens and better camera resolution. The most durable A-series phone is currently available in Coral and Sea colors (more coming soon.)
- The third is the Google Pixel Tablet, powered by the Tensor G2 chip. It is the first-ever tablet with an in-built Chromecast. It also comes with a Charging Speaker Dock.
In addition, Google I/O 2023 also announced exciting product offers, such as free Pixel Buds A-Series or 50% off on Pixel Buds Pro with Pixel 7a.
Search Labs & Generative AI Experience
Google has been improving the internet search experience since 1998. The company announced a major upcoming update to its search engine.
- Search Labs, a place to test and explore upcoming features in Google Search has been introduced by Google. It will be soon available to Chrome Desktop and Google App users.
- The beta version of Generative AI Experience, an AI-powered immersive version of Google Search will be available soon to the U.S. users. It will provide a more visual experience with features to follow up in a conversational manner through AI.
- Google is also preparing to launch the generative AI shopping experiences that are built on Google’s Shopping Graph. They will include factors to consider for shopping, product options, reviews, ratings, etc.
In addition to this, the Generative AI Experience will also feature Code Tips to generate codes and an option to export search results directly into sheets. The search engine will also add a perspective filter to find out results with first-hand experience and expertise.
Duet AI for Workspace
Google is shaping the future of the Workspace with its AI. We’ve already used the auto-complete feature in Gmail quite thousands of times. Now, Google is taking AI beyond this through Duet AI. It will work across the Workspace apps.
- Replying to emails in Gmail is now going to be easier with AI. It will allow you to generate emails with AI prompts, considering the entire thread for context.
- Google Sheets will also feature AI-powered image generation with a single click. The image generation is likely to be powered by Adobe Firefly.
- Similarly, Google Meet will also enable AI-powered background generation through prompts.
- The assisted writing feature in Google Docs is now more powerful than ever. The new smart chips, variables, and templates will be able to easily create content with prompts. In addition to this, the in-built grammar and spell-checker are also improved.
- Google also showed a glimpse of its newest project Starline Prototype, which enables more immersive real-life 3d video conferencing.

AI in Google Maps, Home, & Photos
Google I/O 2023 was filled with a lot of AI and futuristic announcements, including immersive experiences in Google Maps, Magic editor in Google Photos, and Universal Translator.
- Google Maps will soon receive a major feature of immersive view for routes. It will provide a bird-view of the journey to the users, using the 3d street view. The immersive view for routes in Google Maps will be soon available in selected cities.
- Magic Editor, a new feature is coming to Google Photos. It will come with AI-powered editing features, such as erasing unwanted things, changing the color of the sky, etc. Google Pixel devices will receive access to it early this year.
- Google is pushing the AI boundaries in the translation industry as well. Universal Translator, an AI-powered translation tool has been announced by Google at I/O 2023. It will offer real-time translation of videos, and match the words with the lip moments of the speaker.
- The Google Home App has also been updated with amazing features. It is available for download on the Play Store and App Store.
In addition to the above updates, Google also announced Project Tailwind, an AI-powered notebook for taking notes.
Improvements to PaLM & Bard
Google is doubling down on AI. The company announced advancements in its existing language model, which will soon be available for use in its products.
- PaLM 2, a better and more powerful version of the language model, was announced at the conference. Currently, it powers more than 25 products that were announced at the conference. It uses the new PaLM API.
- Google’s health research team fine-tuned the model for medical knowledge. The Med-PaLM 2 answers the questions related to patients’ information by processing the X-ray images. The technology is revolutionizing the health industry as well.
- Bard is getting better. There has been plenty of improvements in Google Bard. It is now open to more users in different countries. Google also announced that Bard will soon support image prompts.

In addition to this, the Google I/O conference 2023 announcements suggest that there are a lot more AI advancements coming in the future. The company is also working on Gemini, a multimodal capability. The Bard will also be available for integration with third-party apps such as Adobe, Instacart, and Khan Academy.
New Updates in Android OS
Google I/O 2023 also announced ‘All things Android’ at the conference. The Android ecosystem is also adapting AI at a great pace. Google has some major updates for all the Android lovers out there!
- Google announced an AI-based feature – Magic Compose. This will help the users add some extra spark to their conversations by choosing from six different styles of crafting messages.
- Android 14 is also coming by the end of 2023, with all-new features such as a monochrome theme, emoji wallpaper, cinematic 3d wallpaper, and generative AI wallpapers. Android 14 will also support more crisp and clear photos with the support for 10-bit HDR images. Android 14 beta is now available!
- Google also announced the upcoming Wear OS 4 and its features. The new updated OS will support backup and restore, automatic permission carryover from the phone, etc.
- At the Google I/O 2023 conference, the company announced that Android Auto will be available to more cars soon. The OS will power over 200 million cars on the road.
Safe, Secure, and Responsible Experiences
- Google introduced the Safe Browsing API, which enhances the security of users by identifying potentially harmful sites and pages and preventing scams. The spam protection features will also be extended to Google Drive.
- Other major security announcements include the “data deletion” option in Google Play, app location sharing prompt, Content Safety API, and Perspective API.
- Google is also launching a tool to detect AI-generated synthetic audio. It can detect synthetic audio with 99% accuracy. In Google Search, there will be about this image option, which will provide more details such as when it was first indexed, where it first appeared, where else it’s been seen online, and if it shows up on fact-checking sites.
Other Tools for Businesses and Developers Announced in Google Conference 2023
Google I/O developer conference 2023 also announced a lot of new features for businesses and developers. The highlighted announcements for businesses and developers at Google I/O 2023 include:
- Google Cloud introduces three new models in the Vertex AI, for coding, image generation, and text-to-speech. Further, the Duet AI in Google Cloud will also help generate codes and deploy them.
- The generative AI technology is now also available in the Google Play console. You can draft a Google Play store listing in English, just by using some prompts.
- The interesting thing for the gamers out there – Google has announced a hands-free gaming mouse under Project Gameface. The no-touch mouse works by tracking the landmarks of the face in real-time.
- The Aerial View API is also available for the developers, which can be used to add a bird-view of any location to apps. This experience can be furthered by the latest Photorealistic 3D Tiles feature to deliver more immersive map experiences.
- Other important announcements include Compose for TV, updates in ChromeOS, no-code customization for Wear OS faces, etc.
