What is Google Gemini AI?
Gemini is the new artificial intelligence model created by Google and its parent company, Alphabet.
“Gemini is the result of large-scale collaborative efforts by teams across Google, including our colleagues at Google Research,” according to Dennis Hassabis, CEO and co-founder of Google DeepMind.
The core of this AI model is to be multimodal, meaning it can easily understand data from various formats of information like:
- Text
- Code
- Audio
- Image
- Video
Gemini can better understand nuanced information and answer complicated topics as well. Besides this, it is good at explaining complex subjects like math and physics.
How is Google Gemini AI Different?
Google beats hard on this model and claims it to be the most flexible yet.
To achieve scalability, it efficiently ran on everything from data centers to mobile devices. Currently, Gemini released its first version in three different sizes:
1. Gemini Ultra –
A largest and most capable model for highly complex tasks.
Google describes Gemini Ultra as the most capable model, which is the first one to outperform human experts on MMLU. It is completely designed for highly complex tasks, and is currently in the testing phase.
This version uses a combination of 57 subjects like math, physics, history, law, and more for testing and problem-solving abilities. And that is a pretty impressive number.
2. Gemini Pro –
A model for scaling across a wide range of tasks.
Google Pro is an advanced reasoning, planning, and understanding version currently used to fine-tune Google Bard. This is one of Google Bard’s biggest upgrades since its launch.
This update is available in more than 170 countries and territories in English. And it will have new languages and locations in the near future.
3. Gemini Nano –
An efficient model for on-device tasks.
This model runs on smartphones, especially Google Pixel.
Google Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone engineered with Gemini Nano, which powers features like summarizing the recorder app or rolling out Smart Reply in Gboard, starting with WhatsApp.
More such messaging apps will get added in the near future.
Looking at what Google has presented to the world with Gemini AI, we can say it stands out due to its training, its multimodal features without the need for any other integration, and how it is accessible for day-to-day tasks.
“These are the first models of the Gemini era and the first realization of the vision we had when we formed Google DeepMind earlier this year. This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we’ve undertaken as a company.” said Sundar Pichai.
How to Access Gemini AI?
Currently, out of the 3 versions, 2 are out on Google products. Gemini Pro is available on Bard chatbot, and Gemini Nano is available on Pixel 8 smartphones. Soon, Google plans to make Gemini on Search, Ads, Chrome, and other Google services.
They have already started experimenting with Gemini on Search, trying to make the Search Generative Experience faster.
Developers and enterprises can access Gemini Pro using Gemini API in Google AI studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Android developers will also be able to use Gemini Nano via AICore, which will be accessible with an early preview of AICore.
Gemini Ultra is not yet available, and in the future, Google wants to make this version first available to selected customers, developers, partners, and experts for experimentation.
And based on the feedback, they will roll out Gemini Ultra.
Wrapping up
2024 already looks like a great year for AI with the launch of Google’s new AI.
And it looks like it is going to bring a lot of changes in the way AI can impact our everyday lives.
We look forward to seeing the impact of this AI model and the response of the other players in this industry.
